Al-Azhar said in a statement that the insulting remarks by members of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) signifies their ignorance about history and the Seerah of messengers of God, RT Arabic reported.

It said sacrilegious remarks like this by those who despise interfaith dialogue are an invitation to extremism and spreading hatred and sedition among followers of different religions.

Al-Azhar said such remarks and conducts are examples of real terrorism that can plunge the word into crisis and wars.

That is why the international community must decisively and resolutely counter such actions, the center added.

BJP national spokeswoman Nupur Sharma was suspended from the party’s primary membership on Sunday for comments made in a recent television debate, while the BJP’s Delhi media operation head Naveen Kumar Jindal was also expelled.

The insulting remarks by two BJP spokespersons namely Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal have been vehemently condemned by Muslim countries.

Netizens in a number of Islamic countries in the Persian Gulf have called for boycotting Indian products following the incident.

Facing the backlash, the BJP took action on Sunday and suspended the two officials from the party's primary membership till further notice.

In a statement, the BJP claimed that it “strongly denounces insult of any religious personalities of any religion,” without directly pointing to the recent incident.

Iran, Qatar and Kuwait also summoned Indian envoys to voice their strong protest.
